It was Valentine’s Day last Friday. My son brought home a big box of specialty cookies. Scott and I chose the traditional chocolate chip and Marcus chose the cookies n cream cookie. He said we could have two each. I chose to save the last one for my daughter. Of course it had pink frosting and different shades of pink sprinkles. Scott got Marcus to make dinner so I didn’t have to cook. These were simple ways of showing love for each other.

The family unit is a great way to learn about love. Having children is one way to understand the depths of God’s love for us. Jesus taught us that when we pray, we address God as our Father. Therefore, we are all God’s children. This truth helped me a lot when my kids were young, especially my firstborn.

The first time Marcus got sick and the medication didn’t seem to be helping, I felt so helpless. I couldn’t stop his crying and he looked at me with pleading eyes to make his pain stop. All I could do was pick him up and try to rock him to sleep and prayed that God would help Marcus get over the illness quickly. I knew God wasn’t helpless. He was and is good.

When it was time for Marcus to attend public school, I wondered how God felt when He sent Jesus down to Earth to be among men. If God was able to send His son away from heaven, then I could trust Him to be with Marcus while he was away from home with strangers in school. I knew He loves my children more than I do.

Being in a family that follows Jesus, we have a small glimpse of what it’s like to be under the mighty hand of a loving Father. How have you seen God’s love in your family?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending Your Son to be an example of Your love. Help us to trust in You when we are in situations that we don’t understand or feel helpless. You are a loving God and worthy of our trust and praise. May we share Your love with others so they see You in us.

In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.
