A long time ago when my kids were preschool age, they participated in an Easter egg hunt during the children’s worship time. There were only 12 eggs hidden so the older kids had to help the younger ones find an egg. The adult leader told the kids not to open the plastic eggs until they were told to.

After all 12 eggs were found, the leader asked, “Who found the egg with the number one on it?” A kid would raise the egg and was given permission to open it. Inside was a leaf that looked like a palm branch and a verse that the kid read or gave to an older kid to read.

This happened 12 times with the egg filled with something that represented an event during Holy Week. The last egg was empty because it represented the empty tomb – Jesus resurrected!

The kids enjoyed the egg hunt and the story of Jesus’ last days. I told the children’s worship leader that she did a wonderful job and the activity was a great idea. She said the idea was found online and that anyone could make their own.

So the next time I had to keep kids busy during Easter, I made my own resurrection eggs. Having two kids attending annual Easter egg hunts, I had an assortment of colors and sizes of plastic eggs to choose from. That was a good thing because some of the items I had were bigger than the usual plastic eggs. The variety made it fun to hide and for kids to find them.

I kept my resurrection eggs for as long as I could by keeping it separate from the other plastic eggs. As it normally does in our closet some eggs would disappear or get used for some other project or activity. Instructions to make these can be found online or just go through the verses of Jesus’ last day and pick 12 of them. Then find 12 objects to put in plastic eggs. Have fun with it as I did.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending Jesus so that we can have a relationship with You. Help us to live with a heart full of gratitude because of all that You have done for us. May the empty tomb remind us of the new life we have because of Jesus.

In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.
