When I lived on the West Coast, most of the door knockings were from proselytizers or kids fundraising. We lived in a small town of less than 6k people, so the school district didn’t discourage fundraising door to door as long as the students went to houses they knew the people.

Here in the South, I live in an older neighborhood. So, most of the people who knock at my door are residential service professionals letting me know they are in the neighborhood or are package deliverers. I don’t remember having proselytizers knock on our door but after we moved in, neighbors would ask if we found a church yet.

My network marketing company prohibits door-to-door solicitation, but I can see how it works for the residential service providers. If I don’t open the door, they just leave their information letting me know of their services. If I do open the door, there is face to face interaction and an opportunity for connection.

We had our roof replaced by a company that sent one of their people knocking on doors of their customer’s neighborhood to ask if the neighbor was in the market for a new roof. We got control of the bugs in and around our home when a pest control salesperson knocked on our door to let us know of their special offer.

Since Jesus says He is standing at the door and knocking, then going door to door to share about your products or services is a good idea. Jesus also says to ask, seek, and knock but for those wanting customers, it should be seek, knock, and ask. We seek out those that would be a good fit for our products or services, we knock at their door, then we ask them questions to find out if our products or services will help them. If there isn’t a good fit, they may know someone else who would be.

Knocking on doors is a method that still works in the 21st century. Even during COVID, the door knockers would get off the porch after knocking and speak at least 3 feet away. This was a way of having real conversations to build personal connection that leaves a great first impression for future opportunities.

Prayer

Dear God in heaven,

Thank You for giving us the opportunity to get to know you more. Help us to continue asking, seeking, and knocking in faith. May we be more like Jesus in wanting to share our lives with others.

 In Your Son’s name, Amen
