I knew that having a direct selling business would get me out of my comfort zone. What I didn’t know was how much I would grow spiritually. Starting a business was a leap of faith. Staying in business also requires a lot of faith.
When Scott told me that he wanted to quit his job to start a business, I thought he was crazy. After much reflection (almost two years), I realized I was being selfish because his quitting meant no more steady paycheck that allowed me to stay at home. It meant changes in our lifestyle, getting out of my comfort zone.
Have you heard of the quote by John C. Maxwell, “If we are growing, we are always going to be out of our comfort zone.” It’s normal to just want to stay in our comfort zone but that’s not where God wants us to stay.
Owning a business challenges us to do things we fear or are not confident in. Speaking in front of people, even friends, is one of my fears. I would do it scared and nervous when needed but would rather stay behind the scenes. Scott was comfortable talking to people in person but when creating a digital course, he wasn’t comfortable just talking to the camera. He got better after many sessions but still prefers real people even on Zoom than just a camera.
I struggled with the question, “If I can’t share my faith, how can I share my products?” So learning how to share the gospel helped in my business. I didn’t feel comfortable with the way we were trained to get customers. So I wasn’t getting customers.
I didn’t have the right mindset. I took it personally when the answer was ‘no’ to being my customer. I was thinking more about myself than about the other person. I had to transform my focus and find a comfortable way to do business. I’m still learning and trying Jesus’ Strategies.
When we grow, our comfort zone gets bigger as we get confident in things we’ve never done before. Our business journey can serve as opportunities for growth that shapes our character and our relationship with God and others.
Prayer
Dear God in heaven,
Thank You that we can find strength and guidance in Your Word. Help us to build relationships, be good stewards of what You’ve given us, and honor You with what we do. May our businesses reflect Your light in this world.
In Your Son’s name, Amen

Song
“Oceans“ by Hillsong United reminds me of Peter stepping out of the boat to walk towards Jesus on the water. That is what I call a leap of faith and he did walk on water until he wasn’t focusing on Jesus. There were other songs titled Comfort Zone but I couldn’t find a lyric version.
