We all experience fear from time to time. What we do with that unpleasant feeling can either help us or hurt us, especially if we own a business. Fear can cause us to get stuck because of the many uncertainties in business. Do we let fear hold us back or let it decide our outcome?

I usually freeze when I’m fearful. I don’t make a move, so I’m stuck. If I don’t freeze, then I’ll run away. I’ll avoid what’s scary. Scott, on the other hand, would usually face his fears. He would move forward even while he is still afraid because he knows action is better than no action in business.

I have been working on facing my fears. Here are three things that have helped.

Grin and bear it. Studies have shown that smiling with eyes twinkling and showing teeth lower stress levels. Smiling tells the brain that even though we are afraid, we are confident to handle the situation. To really smile (not fake smile), think of what God has done before that brought you through hard times and think He can do it again.

Improve skills. Practice doing things the right way will boost our confidence. With more confidence, we are more likely to take action. The more you do something like pray, the better you get at it. It won’t feel so awkward.

Think clearly. Acknowledge what is causing the fear. Is it controllable or not? Don’t let fear decide the outcome. Don’t dwell on what could happen but think of the present facts and give the situation to God.

What are other things to do to face fear? Let us know!

Prayer

Dear God in heaven,

Thank You for giving us emotions. Help us to remember that You have given us a spirit of power, love, and self-control. May we trust in You because You are our God who helps us.

 In Your Son’s name, Amen

Verses

Psalms 56:3 When I’m afraid, I trust in You

2 Timothy 1:7 God didn’t give us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you! Don’t be frightened, for I am your God! I strengthen you, I help you

Philippians 4:6 Don’t be anxious about anything but in everything, through prayer, petition with thanksgivings, give your request to God

 Song

Fear Is A Liar“ by Zach Williams is a great song that reminds us of John 8:44. The devil is a liar and the father of lies. He doesn’t want us to trust God but wants to steal us away from our heavenly Father and kill and destroy us (John 10:10).

 Call to Action

If you have already prayed, looked up the verses in your Bible, and listened to the suggested song, then find one way to face your fears and just do it. We would love to know how it goes.
