Remember the song, “Somebody’s Watching Me” featuring Michael Jackson in the chorus? That was on the creepy side. Then there’s the song we may have sang as a kid, “Angels watching over me.” That is more comforting. As believers, we know somebody is always watching over us.
We are a walking billboard of Jesus. People are watching at work, at school, and at home. If you are a parent, your kids are watching you. Youngsters copy what they see.
I remember volunteering in my son’s toddler room one Sunday. There was a toddler who had a big tantrum until he got his way. At home later that day, my son started rolling on the ground and pounding his fists and feet on the floor when I told him it was time to put away his toys. I just looked at him and wondered what he was doing because it was the first time he had done this. Then I remembered the toddler from earlier that morning. I smiled, shook my head, and started singing the Clean Up Time song. That made him stop and then started to help to put his toys away.
Another time I was done putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher and I turned around to see toddler Marcus watching me with his hands over his tummy. I asked if he was feeling sick and he shook his head. I asked if he needed a drink and he shook his head while rubbing his tummy. He smiled when I looked down and noticed that I was rubbing my big round pregnant tummy, too. I had a habit of placing my hands on my tummy closer during my last months of pregnancy.
If our kids copy what we’re doing, are we being a good example? If our coworkers are observing how we do our job, are we being a good employee? If our classmates are watching us, are we being a good student? We are Christ’s ambassadors. Are we representing God honorably?
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for watching over us. We don’t deserve Your love and care. Help us to be a reflection of Your love and care. May we be more like Jesus every day and shine His light to others.
In Your Son’s precious name, Amen.
Verses
Psalms 91:11 God will order His angels to protect you wherever you go
Proverbs 15:3 The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping His eye on both the evil and good
Ephesians 5:1 Be imitators of God as dearly loved children
2 Corinthians 5:20 We are Christ’s ambassadors
Song
“All Night All Day” by Otis L. McCoy is the song I remember singing as a child. There is a Toby Mac sample of “Somebody’s Watching Me” called “Somebody’s Watching”.
Call to action
If you have already prayed, looked up the verses in your Bible, and listened to the suggested song, then share a time when someone observed you and told you about it. I’ll go first. One of my previous colleagues told me that I am so calm whenever I helped her with a technical problem. This can only be from the Lord because I’m usually nervous when I need to go into a classroom to fix things. Now it’s your turn.
