Attending events like a conference is a great way to meet new people. Last week, Scott and I attended a conference. It was my first one in over a decade. Scott on the other hand seemed to go to one every year. This Worship Together Conference was a first for both of us. Scott estimated over 500 people there.

We decided to sit closer to the back since the front seats were for premium attendees. I am more of an introvert than Scott. So he was the one to ask the person sitting next to me if he traveled far. That started a conversation that lasted till the program started. It helped to know a set of basic questions to ask in order to get through the awkward phase of meeting someone new.

On the second day, we were introduced to several people. Most of the men reached out to shake my hand, so I followed through to shake theirs. If they told me their name, I told them mine. We chatted a bit and I felt comfortable in one group to share about why we moved from the west coast.

It was a great conference! We enjoyed ourselves and used the three tips that were mentioned in Scott’s podcast episode 134 “Meeting New People?“.

  • Ask simple questions
  • Know the social etiquette rules
  • Follow the example of the other person

Prayer

Dear God in heaven,

Thank You for the opportunities to meet new people with similar interests. Help us introverts to have the courage to get to know those that You put in our path. Give discernment to the extroverts to know who You want them to talk to.

 In Your Son’s name, Amen

Verses

Colossians 4:5 Be wise in the way you act with outsiders; make the most of every opportunity

Titus 3:2 Show complete courtesy to all people

Matthew 7:7 Ask and seek

Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would like them to do to you

   Song

Love God Love People“ by Danny Gokey is a song that keeps it real simple when I tend to complicate things. The more people we meet, the more people will get to know the love of Jesus.

 Call to Action

If you have already prayed, looked up the verses in your Bible, and listened to the suggested song, then register for an event such as a conference or convention and let us know how it went.
