Have you heard of the 10-10-10 strategy? Someone emailed me about it and said that’s how he looked at choices. The strategy is to look at the consequences of your decision in 10 minutes, 10 months, and 10 years. This technique helps you get out of the present moment to look at three different time frames of immediate, short, and long term in order to see if your choice matches your priorities. 

Usually when we make decisions, we are emotional or basically looking at what is best for us at the moment. We don’t look at how our decisions will affect others. The 10-10-10 strategy lets us imagine how our decisions will look like in the future when we are not emotional and see a bigger picture.

For those who believe in the Bible, we should also look at the consequences of our decisions in light of eternity. That can make a big difference to some of our choices! Sadly, I currently don’t have this habit, but I do check to see if my choices would make God happy or not.

One of my subscribers (Thanks Chela!) shared a devotional that she thought was opposite of the 10-10-10. “God first, not my logical evaluation of things first.” Her take on the process is to first affirm that the King of kings and Lord of lords knows what the decision should be because He is sovereign and goal-directed. Next, pay attention to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Last is to accept God’s way of doing it because we want His will to be done not ours.

When we have regular Bible reading, and times spent in prayer and with other believers, our perspective will shift from a selfish view to a Godly view. We will see the world in a different light which is brighter than what the world can give.
