The month of February is usually associated with hearts and love. I remember a project in elementary school that we had to finish the sentence, “Love is…” and then draw a picture of it. If my memory is correct (it was a very long time ago), I drew a picture of a dog licking a kid’s face under the caption, “Love is a wet kiss from your furry friend.”

According to the Believers Instruction Book: Living Edition, love is action not a feeling. During a lesson on love for teenagers, I was surprised that one of their answers for “What is love?” was “God.” After thinking about it, the kids who answered “Love is God” grew up in Sunday School. They were trained to answer questions with “God”, “Jesus”, “Bible” because most of the time, they would be correct with those answers.

The answer is found in God, Jesus, and in the Bible. God showed us what love is by sending His one and only Son so that we can be a part of His family. Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross because He loved us so much. As a child, I didn’t know how to love others because I didn’t know how to love myself. As I learned more about God and met with other believers, I slowly learned to love myself and learned to love others as well. It is an ongoing process that with the help of the Holy Spirit, I’m getting better at.

When we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, then we are able, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to love others and ourselves. It is such an awesome experience. My hope is that you get to experience the love of God, too.

 Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for loving us first even when we were enemies. Thank you for sending us Jesus so that we can know you more. Help us to love others as You do.

In Your Son’s name, Amen.

Song

Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury

Call to action

If you have already prayed, looked up the verses in your Bible, and listened to the suggested song, then read the book of Ruth. It is only 4 chapters and shows love in action.
