The last post got me thinking about the question, “If Adam and Eve did not sin, would they grow old and then die?” According to the first book of the Bible, God warned Adam that he could eat from every tree in the garden except for one specific tree in the middle of the garden. He could even eat from the tree of life but if he ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he would certainly die.

This seemed to imply that Adam and Eve would live forever if they obeyed God. The apostle Paul stated that death came into the world because of sin. So if the first man did not sin, there would not be death.

When God looked at all He had made on the sixth day, he saw that it was very good. It seemed that the original plan was no death. God created a perfect place for Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and use its resources. They were given the responsibility to rule the earth and take care of the plants and animals on it.

Since Adam didn’t die right away, the earth was still good enough to have him live for 930 years after the curse. If God didn’t banish Adam and Eve from Eden, they could have eaten from the tree of life and lived forever.

I think it is interesting that the tree of life is also mentioned in the last book of the Bible. It seems that the tree of life will also be in heaven. So in the end, God will have his original plan of creation.

Our God is so good that He provided a way so that our disobedience can be forgiven and we can have a right relationship with Him again. He even provided a place for those people who choose not to be with Him for eternity.

Prayer

Almighty God in heaven,

Thank You for loving us so much that even though we disobeyed Your command, You planned a way for us to live forever with You. We do not deserve Your mercy, grace, and patience. Help us to share Your truth with others so that Your kingdom will be expanded.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
