I had the wrong mindset about selling when I first started. I felt awkward and uncomfortable because I didn’t have the right skills and I took things personally. I was told I wasn’t pushy or aggressive to be good at selling. So I avoided that part of the business.
Now I know better. Selling is not about the product or service but about the people we serve with our products or services. We have our business so that we can help people but they need to know that we have the solution. Selling is helping people get out of their own thoughts so that they can make the right decision to help themselves.
I used to think that I needed to know all the features and data about my products and services. Now I need to know what challenges, hopes, or goals that the people I want to help have so that I can determine whether my products or services are the right fit for them.
I thought that I had to know all the answers that might come up during a sale but I needed to ask more questions so that the person I was helping could come to the right decision about whether my products and services would be their solution. Even if the answer is a ‘no’, I did my job of helping them have clarity to make a decision.
I’m still awkward and uncomfortable about selling but I’m not avoiding that important part of the business. Selling is a skill that needs practice and experience. So I’m learning and growing every time I do it.

Dear God in heaven,
Thank You for sending Your Son to serve us. Help us to be more like Him and humble ourselves to serve others, too. May we have the courage to do what You want us to do in our business so that You are glorified.
